The My Little Pony fandom is a common interest of school-aged individuals. In addition, many of the “friendship lessons” featured in the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic” TV show, parallel the friendship lessons featured in various forms of “social skills curricula” routinely utilized by special education teachers, such as Superflex and The Hidden Curriculum. In this presentation, an autistic My Little Pony fan, self-advocate, and graduate of special education will discuss how he “educates” educators about the My Little Pony fandom, based on his experiences in special education where he underwent social skills training (wherein he observed many “parallels” between the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic friendship lessons and the social skills lessons he received while in school), his experiences as an autistic self-advocate giving presentations to educators at education conferences and school trainings, and his connections with the My Little Pony fandom.
